Il 18 marzo del 1968, Robert Kennedy, fratello del presidente assassinato John Kennedy e candidato egli stesso alla presidenza USA, all'Università del Kansas tenne il seguente discorso sul PIL (Prodotto Interno Lordo, ovvero quella quantità economica che dovrebbe misurare la ricchezza, o fatturato annuo, di una nazione). Sarà assassinato anche lui, il 6 giugno 1968, solo 3 mesi dopo quel discorso: “Con troppa insistenza e troppo a lungo sembra che we have renounced our personal excellence and values \u200b\u200bof our community in favor of the mere accumulation of worldly goods. Our GDP has exceeded 800 billion dollars a year but the GDP - if we judge the U.S. based on this - that GDP includes air pollution and cigarette advertising and ambulances to clear the streets by the carnage . " The GDP is one-dimensional size, has only one dimension, can only increase or decrease and therefore can not restore the greatness and beauty of life, which is multidimensional, is made of many things, among them, says Bob Kennedy " the joy of the games of our children, their education and the strength of our marriages. Questa mania, ossessione della crescita economica porta a mercantilizzare tutto, cosicché si producono merci delle quali non ci sarebbe assolutamente bisogno, si producono più rifiuti, perché hanno un costo che fa crescere il PIL, si produce più CO2, perché il consumo di carburante fa crescere il PIL, perché c'è qualcuno che ci guadagna su. Si inventano dei pretesti per combattere le guerre, perché le guerre arricchiscono l'industria degli armamenti, le quali fanno crescere il PIL. Questa è la dimostrazione che la decrescita economica non comporta una riduzione della qualità della vita, ma potrebbe comportare persino un innalzamento della qualità della vita, proprio perché è priva di fondamento l'equazione merce = bene. E perché poi non si richiede di rinunciare all'energia, ma si richiede di migliorare la tecnologia perché l'energia possa essere usata in modo meno dispersivo e perché possa essere portata avanti l'energia delle fonti ecologiche e rinnovabili: eolico, solare, geotermico, dei biocarburanti.... Come dice Beppe Grillo: Non abbiamo bisogno di una centrale nucleare da 1 milione di Kilowatt, ma abbiamo bisogno di 1 milione di centrali da 1 Kilowatt: ognuno di noi può essere produttore in proprio di energia alternativa solare, eolica, ....e poi l'energia si condivide in rete, è solo questione technology, these things are already doing!
